WORKOUT FOR THE OCTOBER TURF STAKES

Hailey decided that it was time for Terror Smile to get a little break from her hard training, even though she had a huge race coming up. This would be perfect for her; a little break from all the hard training. Hailey knew exactly where to take her, too. The beach. She believed that this would be the first time that Smiles would ever go to the beach, so it would be a good experience for her as well.
Hailey left on the trails with Smiles early in the morning. The filly seemed a little confused that she wasn't heading to the track, as she kept looking back at the racetrack with her ears pricked forward. She also seemed confused with Hailey on her back instead of Aiden but in any case she seemed eager to be in a new place. After about a twenty minute ride they reached the surf. Smiles let out an excited whinny towards the ocean.
The waves crashed gracefully on the shore. Smiles took off towards them as soon as Hailey let her have some rein. She barreled through the sea, her excited whinnys peircing the air. Hailey pulled her up and trotted her back onto the shore. "Calm down.. We haven't even started your gallop yet." She laughed as the fillie's ears pinned flat against her head. Hailey patted her and Smile's ears flicked forward. Hailey then grinned and kissed to the filly letting her have some rein. Smiles snorted and then took off at a slow canter down the beach. Hailey urged her a bit more but didn't push the filly. Smiles gained a little bit more speed but not much. Hailey kissed to her again and whispered to the filly, "Come on, girl. Let's run!" The fillie's ears lay against her head but she took off into a charge down the sand.
Seagulls fled as the pair tore pass them. Hailey let out a laugh, smiling brightly. "Good girl!" They went on for about a furlong more across the waves until Smiles suddenly slid to a stop. Hailey nearly fell off but recovered before falling. Smiles snorted and threw her head as a lone seagull flew out in front of them and over the fillie's head. "Woah... Shhh." Hailey soothed the startled filly. Smiles jigged forward a couple steps, as if she was trying to break out into a run. Hailey spoke to her and pulled on the reins, though. "Shh. It's okay. That's enough for today." With those words, Hailey leaped off and patted the fillie's warm neck and led her off towards the woodland trails.
Hailey glanced back once at the filly before continuing on home. She's just a bit out of sorts because she wasn't used to the beach or me riding her, Hailey figured. She'll be perfect on raceday.
